Laws and Regulations Regarding Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS)
Sysco is aware of the various laws and regulations passed by multiple states over the last several years to ban perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in different packaging materials and products.
Background:
PFAS are known for being resistant to grease, oil, water, and heat. They are often used in consumer product applications including food packaging. Research shows that some PFAS (e.g., PFOA and PFOS) may be linked to certain health effects. Regulatory bodies, as well as the public, are increasing their scrutiny of the potential presence of PFAS in consumer products, especially in food. Multiple states have adopted legislation banning the use of PFAS in food packaging. The FDA entered into an agreement with PFAS manufacturers to voluntarily phase-out certain PFAS by January 2024.
What Sysco is doing:
Sysco has been collaborating with our various suppliers to determine which products contain PFAS so we can establish a compliant product assortment based on the various state laws and regulations. We will continue to phase out non-compliant products and update our assortment with compliant products to meet the state requirements and deadlines.
Should you have any questions concerning compliant products that Sysco distributes, please contact your Sysco Sales Representative.
